Christine and Fil: A Beach Wedding

Boracay, videos, weddings 6 Comments »

It’ll be quite some time before we get back to Boracay so we made this count.  =)

What are the things you love to do in Boracay?

I like…
long walks on the beach
choriburger!
mango-banana shake at Jonas
thin crust Pizza at that little stand beside Discovery

Amanda Tirol’s flaming golf cart

Honey and Reese: Shangri-la Boracay

H for Honey. That’s what our dear bride said after receiving her surprise gift (a white Hermes bracelet) from the groom.  Only very close family and friends were in attendance, befitting the intimate ceremony by the beach.

Shangri-la Boracay was beautiful  It was everything they said it would be.  See for yourself…

Kate and Will: Digital Love

Never in a million years did I think I’d do a same day edit to a French Electronica duo.

Nor did I ever think I’d get to shoot a wedding officiated by somebody in a multi-colored vest and a tophat.

Never say never ;-)

Pamela and Jimmy: Smashing Pumpkins//Boracay

I was quite bummed when late last year, the copyright police took  down  our Smashing Pumpkins SDE we posted a year ago.

Let’s see how long Virgin records will keep this one up.

In any case, we had absolutely so much fun doing this video.  It was like being invited to one big party where everybody was just nice and kind and tipsy.

PS:  The couple is from Chicago where Billy Corgan and the rest of SP orginally came from.  Today is absolute favorite next to Disarm, Bullet, Landslide, err, you get my point.

Jörg and Barbi Chan’s Wedding in Boracay

After shooting on the 30th and 31st lst year, I voved not to take any more beyond the 29th.

But Barbi’s wedding came along and I just couldn’t say no.

It was amazing! Like she said in the video, months back she just visualized her wedding, everybody in white by the beach, the curious thing was, she was out of a relationship then.  But it happened!  And everything was executed Barbi-style! - with flair and elan.

Can a bride actually do her own makeup?
When was the last time you saw a pink and black gown?
Have you ever attended a wedding with a “bridal boat”?  Not a bridal car?
Or witnessed an exchange of oversized heart rings as wedding bands?

Only here folks.

Melanie and Norman: A Beach Wedding

Not one month after our ‘little mishap” in Boracay Island,  we came back for another wedding, this time on Seawind’s beachfront.

Thankfully, the wedding was smooth sailing … Chillax!

Boracay videos seem to always be the bouncy happy kind.  I set out to purposely do something different.

I always look for a peak in an SDE. This time I didn’t even mind there wasn’t any. Nothing flashy with the edit. Just an honest to goodness juxtaposition of what felt right. The SDE is vows based and that served as the skeleton of the piece.

Bong and Amanda Tirol hosted an after-wedding party.   My saviour (and tanggero) Bordoy Viterbo got me drunk as a skunk.  M+K, Dino, Teena Barretto were also around =).

Christine and Gil: Something happened in Boracay …

And it was bad.   So bad!

You see the greatest nightmare any same-day-edit producer could possibly have happened - my laptop broke down!

Not a broken usb port, not buggy software. But a totally unusable piece of silicon and plastic FUBAR!!!

1pm: While shooting details by the beach:  My assistant, Darlene, comes hurrying down out of breath - “Sir, sir, yung Dell XPS, nag-ha-hang, and color pink yung screen.”

Pink?  Blue I can deal with.  Black maybe.  But pink?  I knew it was bad.

1:20-2pm: Vainly rescucitating the notebook.  nothing!

I was cold and clammy, sweating bullets and this close to telling the couple, umm sorry I can’t.

2pm: But there were other options thankfully.  I called up a photographer friend from Roxas City, Capiz and asked for assistance.  Without pause and hesitation, a laptop was sent to Boracay Island.  The catch - Capiz, apparently was 4 hours away by land.

2:30-5pm:  Lot’s of nail biting and hair-pulling Can you spell S-T-R-E-S-S?

5:30pm:  While waiting for the laptop, there’s always time for Facebook.  I needed to vent.

6pm:  The laptop arrives and we start capturing and converting footage from the 5d.  Editing is simultaneous.

8pm:  I managed to pull off the edit but was having problems exporting the file for playback.  We couldn’t burn or record back to the camera.  Everything that could possibly go wrong did indeed.

8:30pm:  Lights out, showtime!  Cheers and applause!  Everybody was oblivious to what happened.  I grab a glass of vodka and chug it down like a Russian.

The Same Day Edit:

Christine and Gil - Same Day Edit from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

My undying gratitude goes out to Mr. Bordoy Viterbo who selflessly extended his help that day. Thanks to Amanda Tirol too for making life a bit easier to bear that day.

PS: I felt that incident hampered us from giving a 100% percent to the edit and so the following days after, we distilled the fantastic speeches given at the reception (especially Christine’s Dad) and created this highlights piece for them.

Surprise Christine!

Cynclaire and Raffy, Back to Bora

Boracay, videos, weddings 23 Comments »

A hot pink bridal gown. That pretty much sums up (and everything it connotes) the wedding of Cyn and Raffy.

It was clearly established at the eve of the event that this was going to be a SUPER FUN wedding with not a sober person within a kilometer’s radius.

My team and Dino’s were hammered at the engagement party. What with the free-flowing cocktails and beer. We were systematic - doing it alphabetically - starting with the Amaretto Sour, going through the Mojitos and ending up with the Weng-Weng.

And somewere along the buzz came the drunken idea of the “perfect cocktail”.

Of course, in order of the hot pink bride to stand out, everybody was required to wear white.  Who was I to go against the dress code? ;-p

May and Jigger, Boracay

The invitation said it all.

It was going to be a grand three-day celebration the likes of which Boracay Island has never seen - the couple’s birthday celebration on Friday, the wedding on Sat and an island cruise and Luau the day after.

And if that weren’t enough, David Morales flew in to play at the after-party.  And what an event that was! It lasted until daybreak (me getting old, I haven’t partied like that since Ken Ishi and Tricky in the late 90s).

Jigger and May from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

One look and the adjectives that come to mind easily would be “grandiose” and “extravagant”.  But as an attendee, I felt it to be a really special celebration amongst family and friends.  The speeches were heartfelt and the marriage vows deeply moving.

At the core of it all, amidst the trappings, here  were two people proclaiming commitment.
