Analog Love
Super 8, weddings April 3rd, 2008There is a reason why audiophiles still prefer vinyls to compact discs, why people still shoot on film rather than CF cards.
And there is a reason why we are going to offer to shoot weddings on film and not just digital.
Shooting in film offers a warmth and atmosphere irreplicable in video. The vintage look of Super 8 is an excellent medium to use on your wedding day. It’s the epitome of memory. Super 8 is rough around the edges, grainy, flicker-full - much like the way we remember things.
Film is not about precision, faithful reproduction and high definition. Not more pixels but more feeling. Analog Love baby!
We have tried so hard to achieve the “film look”, that it only makes sense to do away with the “look” and shoot in “film” from the outset.
Hannah and Rob’s wedding was shot with a Canon 814xls with Fuji Eterna film. Sadly, there are no more processing laboratories here in the Philippines so I had to ship out the rolls to California.

Many thanks to Kristen of Bliss and Chris of MasonJar for their help in “breaking me in”.

Congratulations on entering a Super8 film world.
In first photo you’re like policeman with speedradar :))
Love it Direk! The 80’s lives! Gabby and Sharon forever!
Hi Jason…. I think so that this film is good, but the quality dont like me, i think that you should to make movies in a format more big, like as 16 or more milimeters… I know that this is very very hard, but i think that if you mix your potential, creativity, talent, and wonderful details whit a format more big you obtains a SO SO SO WONDERFUL FILM…
How in each post i say the same: You are my favorite videographer!.
Thanks for share…

Thanks Jorge! I know what you mean. But Super 8 is an entry level medium. The only one I can afford for the meantime
And the quality of the encode in the clip above does not give justice to the hi-res version.
I tried to re-encode the video in quicktime this time with a higher bitrate. Please check it out and see if you see any difference.
Jasooon!! Why oh why. Bakit wala pa nito nung December? Sigh. I sooo wanted the Super 8 look for our wedding — ala my all-time fave “The Wonder Years”

Congrats on your 1st ‘Vimeo’ footage! Haha… (correct me if wrong).
I’m guessing, next you will use a PSP to shoot a wedding and the result will still amazing!
OMG ser…
may local suppliers na ng super8 stuff?
san ka nagpoprocess?
You got it right. I was so impressed with your Vimeo video quality that I had to see for myself.
Keith. Wala dito eh. Sa US pa yung processing ko.
Super8 with a JMag twist - Love it!
Can’t wait to see your first super8 SDE.
jones
Uh-oh better watch my back! JMag’s tearing up the celluloid world now!!!
Awesome and inspiring clip my friend. LOVE how you are choosing to shoot the film. So bold and daring. I’ve seen others try that sort of style and it doesn’t work right, but YOU really are a master of motion picture regardless of the medium.
a masterpiece… too lost for words…oh, wait.. BONECHILL!!!!!WAAAHH…
idol!!!! ayan ka nanaman!!!!! pinapahanga mu nanaman ako!!! rock en roll ka talaga! Revolution = innovation!!! another breakthrough…
Hey Jason! The camera in action already!
Thats the one we shipped right? Perhaps your next purchase should be a processor.
K*
Thanks Kristen. Couldn’t have done it without your advice.
See you in NO!
Jones!
My Man. Thanks for watching. Sent the batch of chemicals over and let’s try it out.
Grace. That’s the camera yup.
The processor’s a longshot. Don’t have the moolah for that.
Thanks for helping me get the cam.
Sayang nga, but we’ll approximate the look as much as we can in the final output. Cheers!
Hola Jason, Sorry my english is bad,

The best talaga! Yun lang.
Wow! You’re doing Super 8 now? That’s amazing work right there! Even though it’s analog, I don’t really care. I love your camera handling skills. I’m trying to emulate your work now with a simple HD camcorder. Anyway, yeah, may not be hi-def but who cares?! I feel it… A lot! ahhaha.. Great job, Jason.
Hi Maser J! Sorry if I haven’t post in a while, that’s what happens when there’s a bank pounding your ass to do an AVP for them.
Anyway, having experienced doing film shooting myself, I’m impressed that Super8 still holds up very well despite the wedding industry being in the realm of digital filmmaking.
And it’s true, processing film nowadays can get really difficult (For example, I recently started shooting using Mamiya RB67, only to find out that the film doesn’t exist here, and I have to fly to HK or Singapore to buy Fuji Velvia 645!)
Anyway, have fun doing film weddings. Though the “other guy” sells 3D photomontages from hell, the images captured on film (photo or motion) still evokes a sense of wonder for viewers and filmmakers alike.
Have fun with your toys! Vive la revolucion!
One last thing… Though your Super8 is great, Super8 doesn’t do you justice. Time to upgrade to a Panavision PFX-M Millennium Panaflex® Camera System, perhaps?
Will you finance the Panaflex David? =)
Possible, lease na lang?
I’ll provide the film, short ends lang nga…
