Confessions of Denied Visa Applicant
whatnot May 22nd, 2007“I feel that you are not professionally established as of this time.”
And so the hammer falls. No WEVA Expo on August, No Florida in January. No Cirque de Soleil. No Mickey Mouse.
Life lesson #1: You can’t always get what you want.
In retrospect, the last year has been tremendous, the awards, the Top 25 thingie and much success with the bookings. It’s easy to forget all these when one disappointment happens. But I shan’t. It’s a nice reality check even. Give me the requisite three days of sulking and I’ll be alright.
Life lesson #2: There’s no shame in denial
Perhaps the greatest question one has to answer after a denial is - why me? What makes another person so special that he’s granted a US Visa and what makes me scum of the earth to get a denial? We’ll never know. But I seek refuge in the fact that half of it is in the luck of the draw - of who the consul is, if she had good coffee that morning or a lousy date the night before. Or perhaps it’s what I said or what I didn’t say. I’m just glad I didn’t confuse my Ps and Fs.
A denial doesn’t make me scum (neither the consul). It’s just the way it is. And I’m not lesser a person because of it.
Life lesson#3: There will always be second chances.
Life goes on. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and all that jazz. I’ll take my chances again come November.

hi jason,
temporary setback lang yan. you will get it next time 10 years pa.
WTF?!
Perhaps it’s a sign… wag ka na daw muna umalis, sila na lang pumunta dito ;D
Hi Jason,
fully understand you. i know how it feels. got denied myself last november when i applied for one! really tough coz it made me so down and depressed. it ruined our new life actually. oh my! now i have to wake up everyday without mike. had to learn to accept the reality that Mike’s in USA na while I’m still here.. waiting for the sun to shine upon me… and eventually get my visa thru his petition. When? That i do not know.
it’s ok jason.. it’ll pass.
take care!
PS. Does your interviewing consul officer look like rosie o’donnell? if yes, we’ll she’s really notorious for visa denials!!!
hehe!
Hey Jason,
Sorry about your Visa troubles. You are a world class videographer and a great person as well. One of the highlights of my trip to your wonderful country was spending some time with you and your lovely wife and the wonderful dinner you treated me and Barbara to. I’m really looking forward to returning the favor WHEN you get your Visa to get over here.
Don’t give up man!
Chris W
right attitude. count your blessings, not your troubles.
nevertheless, hope to see you here in CA when you finally get your stamp later this year.
Thanks for all the cheer guys. Let’s all wait it out.
@Jenny
That sucks big time. It’s a real downer but what could we do di ba? Cheer up na lang :). I hope you’re better now too. Our consul looked more like Dave Letterman only with straight hair. But then again I’m not so sure because I’m erasing him on a subconscious level.
There is always a next time.
See you in the US! It just means you have some more time to save up for all the gadgets and “toys” you are buying in the US!
Jason, Temporary setback lang yan, this will make you a stronger person. Anyway if you decide to go and visit it’s bigger brother Canada, let me know I live in Winnipeg and driving down the states is just a couple of hours. Maybe the US guys here in Canada are more forgiving and can grant you a visa. How about consulting that famous lawyer for immigration (TFC channel) sorry I forgot the name.
More power to you!
Jason…you need Michael Gurfinkel…the immigration lawyer for the stars!!!!
Thanks guys for all the outpouring of support. At the end of it all, we just want a nice big warm hug.
@Pete. I’m no star, a falling star maybe LOL!
I don’t get it. I can’t connect “not professionally established” and “top 25 in the world”.
I thought being denied is not one of the options. I really believe the choices were either 10-years or extra-ordinary talent visa.
Anyway, save that denied stamp, you’ll make a fortune out of it. Ever heard of a story of Einstein being a school drop-out. Hehehe.
huwaattt!!??
oh well… at least not you get to keep and save your money
Sorry to hear that boss jayz… We really hope you do get that visa this November!
si Michael Gurfinkle lang ang katapat nyan
Hello, Sir J!
“Not Professionally established???”
Maybe it’s time the US Embassy became a sponsor of a wedding fair. Let them see who they’re dealing with.
There’s alway next time.
Don’t worry. My visa papers’ been gathering dust for 15 years, and counting!
By the numbers: US Wedding market is valued at US$ 20-30 billion. Indian wedding market is valued at at US$10 billion. BRC (Brazil, Russia, China) wedding block is valued at US$ 30 billion.
But hey, I think these numbers for them are “irrelevant.” (unless they’re talking oil and you’re an exec at an oil giant… :X)
hey kuya jason this is ned from vigan, your BIG fun, sad to know that you’re denied in your visa, don’t worry kuya, my other time pa naman,Cheer up kuya!God Bless!
Jason, I’m sorry to hear this. Would it help if we all sent the consul a statement of how “professionally established” and World Reknown Jason Magbanua is? This really ticks me off, because you and your team are an influence and inspiration to many, many people… myself included.
This shall pass, and you will one day get granted the Visa to come over here, and one day, I can afford a plane ticket over there and learn from the Mazzter himself.
Hey, did you mistakenly apply for a Visa credit card instead??? JK. Tried to add a little humor.
Things happen for a reason, perhaps your destined to apply here in Australia, where we need great talent like you! If you came here you would do very very well, be in high demand, plus its a very multicultural country and the pinoys will open their arms to welcome you (well i know Jay and I will) ..so try for Sydney eh?
You are a winner in our eyes
DAX and NED
yup that’s the right attitude, there’s always a next time and what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.
Hey Jerome
You’re always welcome here.
Thanks man. We’re only too glad to be of help. There will be other chances.
Des.
Hey Des. Thanks for the pick me up. Syndney has alwayss been part of the plan for geataway. Hope to see you again sooner than later. Cheers!
hey jason… i know why you got an umph from the US embassy… its coz you’re too damn good of a videographer ……………………………………….
I heard you don’t need to wait 6 months to try again. As long as you have money - apply lang ng apply! Magsasawa din ang consul! (Happened to a friend’s friend who applied 3 times in 3 months and was finally granted a 10 year multiple entry visa)
Keep on trying, Sir J!
Hopefully, the next time would be “The Time”!
You had it easy. Good thing they said the reason you’re not going to USA, while I’m in “limbo.”
Travelled Europe and Asia, but not America.
Anyway, don’t worry. I’ll keep spreading the good word about you
This reminds me of Will and Grace’s Karen Walker… “Gin, please!”
Hey mr.j
Ok lang yan partner! Ang totoo nyan is kilala ka nila.
Na-iinsecure sila sa yo at baka ikaw pa daw magturo sa mga puti. Sa totoo lang mas maganda pa ang Hong Kong noh hehe!
Kitakits nalang uli tayo sa work men. Tc.
Ok, fine… i shall rephrase…
America is not ready for someone as great as Jason Magbanua…. trust me, I know!
I love you to pieces Sharon.
It’s their loss…
Try again next time!
Can I just say - damn, you’re good at what you do.
‘di bale sir…for sure next time you’ll get a ten year multiple entry visa. tayo na lang sa indonesia hehe…
Keep the faith. When my family was denied a visa to come to my wedding last year…I was bummed. But my mom never gave up, she wrote the American Embassy and vouched for them, and told whomever that this was a special event and they promise to go back home when their vacation was done. Maybe someone can do that for you, if you have any family or friends here that can write a letter on your behalf. Good luck and all the best. I think you do amazing work!!
They were approved for a 3 month visa and were able to come to my wedding and celebrate with me. Don’t give up.
Thanks for the inspiring story Monique.
Jason
you got a prayr as well as support from me - we all know how good and creative you are. I agree with the rest, you are incomparable so just keep hanging…hope that David Letterman-looking-guy will bump his head to reality…
